The Ropewalk is a fun shopping
experience. All six boutiques are
connected by a common interior hall,
which means that you do not have to
be concerned about the weather, hot
or cold, rain or shine. Every
boutique offers different and unique
goods; women’s apparel, infant &
toddler wear, women’s shoes, gifts /
wedding registry, toys and a New
York styles Deli.
Make your shopping plans around
lunch or diner (Th. & Fri.), and be
prepared to be catered to!
We offer the latest and most
fashionable products along with the
most knowledgeable service. We all
look forward to your visit.
History:
The
Ropewalk is located at the former
site of the Big 3 Hardware. Ted and
Ida Walega founded the Big 3 in 1945
with real estate purchased from Ed
Sylvia. Initially the building was
approximately one third the size
shown in the 1984 photo. That year
the owners retired and Wayne Walega
renovated the structure into a
retail plaza. The mall opened in
November 1984.
The Ropewalk name was selected in
tribute to the town’s mariner
heritage. In 1985 the building
received the Plymouth County
Renaissance Award for commercial
rehabilitation. That same year the
New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce
also recognized the revitalization
effort. And recently we celebrated
our 20th anniversary.
